Freedom of Expression

Censorship today is more complex than ever. While many countries legally protect freedom

of expression, content is still regularly restricted—through laws, algorithms, social pressure,

or corporate policies. Governments may ban media under the guise of “national security,”

while social media platforms remove posts that violate community guidelines, often without

transparency.

In some places, censorship is overt—journalists are jailed, websites are blocked, or artists

are silenced. In others, it’s more subtle: demonetization, shadowbanning, or public backlash

can discourage creators from speaking freely. Marginalized voices are especially vulnerable,

as their narratives are often deemed too “controversial” or “inappropriate.”

Modern censorship isn’t just about silencing—it’s about who gets heard, and who decides

what’s allowed. In a digital age where anyone can speak, the new battle is over visibility,

control, and power.
